1.) Impressive mower!

We wanted a battery run electric lawn mower and did all the research. Most of the candidates were in the $350 area. Then I came across the Haussmann. Never heard of the brand and couldn't find out much either. I saw some reviews where people complained about the manual and how hard it was to put it together. but I still chose to purchase one. It came in 24 hours. I opened the box and there it was not difficult to assemble at all. I think it was four screws involved and the tool needed was included. I then plugged it in, waited the required 16 hours and put it to the test. I mowed the front yard. Done. I mowed the back yard. Done. It still showed full charge, but I didn't have anything else to mow. My yard is not big, about 1/4 acre, but the grass was really long since our old mower had been dead for a while. The Haussmann seems well built and looks like it may last for quite a while. One other thing I like (which someone else may dislike) is that the battery is built into the mower. It can't (easily) be removed. That means you have to keep the mower connected to the charger at all times (the manual describes how you should take care of the battery charge wise). This works fine for me since I have an outlet close to where I stow the mower, but if you don't it may be difficult to keep the mower charged. I used the grass collector when I mowed so I have not tried it's mulching capabilities yet. The mower is very powerful and even in my dew wet long grass it ate it's way through without problems. The grass collector bag is not very large, so I had to empty it quite often, but I was used to that from my old gas mower which also had a relatively small grass collection bag. And then there's the greatest benefit of this thing: No fumes, less noise, almost non existent maintenace and no trip to the gas station before mowing. Just keep the blade sharp and battery charged and you're good to go. Even the adjustment of height was very simple with one lever taking care of all wheel. Ingenious! I recommend this mower to everyone with a smaller lawn. Give this battery powered work horse a chance. It won't dissapoint, and the price is just great!

I live on 1/3 acre lot so I was hoping this mower would do the trick. I bought it, received it 4 days later, assembled the two pieces quickly, charged it up and took it for a spin. The grass was wet as it had just rained a few hours earlier and I thought I would test it out in heavy grass just to see how it would cut. WOW. Awesome mower!!! I was very impressed. I have not quit telling my friends about this mower and the ease at which it mows and starts--just awesome.

PROS:

1. easy assemblage--connect handle which is in two pieces and takes 3 mins.
2. battery charger auto senses when battery is fully charged and turns off.
3. $200 cheaper than B&D
4. metal instead of cheap plastic
5. did I mention how easy to start!!
6. mulcher works nicely and I did not have to rake
7. 3 yr warranty and toll free number to call M-F in back of manual should you require parts/service etc.

CONS:

1. friends will make fun of you for using electrical mower
2. battery does not detach for recharging but this does not bother me so much but for some it might.
3. it is a no name brand. I can't find any website or anything about this mower.
4. long term durability not known.

I just used this lawn mower for the first time this past weekend and it did an awesome job. Starting the mower is very simple. Just put in the key and lift the handle and away you go. It was surprisingly quiet and didn't make a lot of noise. Adjusting the height of the blade was easy. In other reviews several have implied that the lawn mower is very heavy but I would beg to differ. I had no problems with this lawn mower and I have to push it up and down a hill on the side of my house. If you think this mower is heavy then you might want to take out a membership at your local gym. Overall the quality is good and I definitely recommend this mower for a small to intermediate size lawn.

We had no problem putting this mower together. All you have to do is assemble the handle. The mower is really easy to use and cuts better than our previous gas mower. We have a smaller lawn but I can see this mower working just fine for a larger lawn.

When cutting taller thick grass start at the higher height and then go back over the lawn at the height of your choice.

The mower is easy to store and clean. Make sure to read all the instructions for usage to know how to properly charge the mower.

First, this mower is heavy... About 90+ pounds. So not good if you have steep grades. Assembly was easy, and I was surprised to see that it was fully charged! I think some other reviews complained about the sloppy look to the packaging. I think this is because it is shipped in separate parts and assembled by the shipping company (and apparently now they charge it as well). Mows nice, quiet too. Get a good shelter for it, doesn't take to getting rained on and kind of heavy for hauling it into the kitchen every time it rains!

I searched online and in the regular hardware stores for a coupla weeks prior to finally purchasing this mower. I was looking for cordless, and not too expensive; this was at least $150 less than similar mowers. I helped the FedEx gal remove it from her vehicle, she had it on it's side. I checked it out and there was no battery leakage. The mower is advertised at 90 pounds, but it didn't feel like it. It was easy to put together and all parts were there. Two of the hubcaps fell off in shipment, (they are indeed worthless and not really required.) I put it on the charger for several days and while the lights did not appear to work on the mower (a problem I read in other reviews) the light on the charger seems to work fine. It was easy to put together and all parts were there. The mower appears to be built solidly, although I though the wheels seemed cheap. It handled nicely on my lawn and over the many small roots. The one step height adjustment is nice. The charge lasted my whole lawn (half acre), I was tempted to do my neighbors lawn, just to see how long the charge would last but passed due to the amount of rocks in his lawn. The blade cut very well, even on very tall grass and the motor never bogged down, I was real surprised there. It was louder than I thought, like a strong vacuum, but still fairly quiet compared to regular gas mowers. I loved the height of the handle as I am 6'2", perfect. I have a feeling this mower should last me several years.

I have not used this mower, but after 12 years with the B&D CMM1000 and a few weeks with the Toro, I thought I'd add some info to help buyers.

Our CMM1000 struggled in tall or wet grass, but most of the time was adequate on power. It also had 24V with a 19" blade. Our 36V 20" Toro has so far cut everything we've thrown at it, but lacks some of the nicer features the WORX or Black & Decker mowers.

With a 24V/19" combination this clearly lacks the power of the Toro. Lacking the nicer features of the Worx or B&D mowers - this clearly leads on price. My main concern with this mower would be quality and support. It also weighs a good 15-20 lbs more than comparable 19" mowers,

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is almost NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a lot cheaper but then you have a cord.

>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.

>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.

>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.

>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18" Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)

>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.

>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted about 7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you could probably kill the batteries in a year or two.

>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.

>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.

Haussmann CLM46NU 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower

Like the previous reviewer, I had a problem assembling the product, although a minor problem.

In my case, the screw that was intended to hold the starter switch in place on the handled would not reach to connect the starter to the handle. The thought of sending back a 100 pound item was not pleasing so I rigged it to work myself. I had to purposely break off the screws that were in the handle and replace with my own screws. This was after considerable time and effort to make it work the way I thought it was intended to work. Strange, because the rest of the assembly was quite simple.

Once assembled and charged (24 hours) I took it out for a mowing. I'm not sure it charged properly as I believe I did something wrong by unplugging to early then plugging back in. The result, the indicator indicated that the charge was low. After using it and recharging the unit, the indicator displays a fully charged unit.

That user error aside, the mowing seemed fine. Starting was a breeze! No yanking a pull cord anymore. I used the bag option instead of the mulching or side discharge (?) option. The bag is easy to install and remove when needing to be emptied. The only problem is that it is small and doesn't hold much. It's hard to determine when the bag needs to be emptied other then seeing clippings accumulating around the bag or feeling the bag to see if its full. I needed to empty it about 3 times on the quarter acre that I mowed. Of course, some of the mowing contained leaves that had fallen, so its hard to determine what summer time only mowing will be like.

As expected, the unit did slow a bit when it hit the very dense Zoysia grass on my lawn. Even my 6.0 HP Craftsmen push mower slowed a bit through it. Certainly, it's not as easy to push as a gas lawn mower but it's not that much different.

I love the longer handle for folks like myself who at 6'6" always seem to have to adjust to things made for a shorter world.

Likes:

1) Easy start!
2) Longer handle for taller folks
3) No trips to gas station or re-fueling during mowing
4) Charge seems to hold for a long time, probably easily doing half an acre.

Dislikes:

1) Poor written instruction manual, especially for the starter piece. I didn't even see a user help number, although I bet it is in there, perhaps the French portion of the manual.
2) A little heavy
3) Tethered charging which always has to be connected. Only in winter months can you disconnect.
4) Difficult starter assembly

I may try the mulching device later on.

If you can put up with the negatives, you will overall like this device. I can recommend it.

the mower was delivered by fedex after a week or so. the box was a little beat up, but the content was all right. first, it is heavy and it's bigger than say the b&d ones. unlike the b&d mowers, the deck is metal. that's good, but it makes it heavier. the mower seemed solidly built. the assembly was a NO-brainer. perhaps they have modified the switch in my model as there is NO assembly needed for the on/off switch as described by the earliest review. basically, here are the steps:

(1) slide the U-bar (one withOUT the switch) into the INNER side of the corresponding connectors of the mower and tighten 4 nuts.
(2) slide the 2nd U-bar (one WITH the switch) onto the OUTER side of the previous U-bar and tighter 2 screws.

and you are DONE. charge the battery for at least 16 hours, insert key and there she goes. since there was nothing to mow in december, i just pushed it around for 10 minutes and it worked. the bag went on and off quickly. overall, i like the mower. here are some potential issues:

(1) it's heavy. so it's kind of hard to push it around especially if you have some slopes.
(2) the handle bar is long. so it's good for people over 6-feet. if you are shorter, you may find the non-adjustable handle bar a bit long.
(3) battery is not easily removable. so it may not be easily replaced once dead.
(4) since it's a no-name brand, parts may be hard to source. so once anything is broken, that may be IT.

UPDATE on [5/30/2010]
i finally got to use this mower for a couple of months now. i like to add that the mower is indeed not a bad one. it's quite powerful. since i use this mower for touch-ups, i cannot say much about the battery runtime. here are a couple of additional suggestions:

(1) remove the 4 wheel caps as they fall off easily during regular use.
(2) remove the rubber flap at the tail of the deck. i guess it's for safety. the flap is annoying and it tore after 3 times of light mowing.

once the caps and flap were removed, i felt i have a pretty robust and solid mower.

I will be curious after the charge if it can make it through
the back yard, as we have a double lot.

It is heavy, and for sure it arrives in a beat up box.
But UPS probably has a pretty tough time moving it.
The metal by the wheel adjust was bent, but was easy to fix.

Even with the weight, rolls pretty easy. Seems like a good height
handle for me at 6'1". Single adjust for all wheels is nice.
Have yet to bag, but does a good job mulching.

Update: 4-24-10

Does appear to be an 18" mower .. at least that's
what it says on the mower label itself.
The battery will last longer than you will.
After a full charge WOW. I cut our back yard,
which is about 85'x 65'. Still showing full charge
when done cutting. So plenty of power for Front & Back.

Just take the hub caps off. They'll fall off in seconds,
but it looks fine without them.

Bottom Line .. Does a great job.
You'll get LOTS of exercise.
No more Gas & Oil to mess with.
Can cut fairly early in the morning,

Shipping box:
I received this new 24V mower this morning. The box was in good shape, considering that there's a 90+ pound mower insided of it. The mower was packed ok. The bagger was not separated from the top of the mower so that the plastic mower lid was a little scuffed. Also, I don't know how far the mower had to travel, but it was extremely dusty inside of it's "sealed" box.

Assemblly:
Very easy. The major components were pre-assembled. I just had 6 bolts total to tighten for the handle and it was ready to go.

First use:
I discovered that the blade was not pre-sharpened but I didn't notice that till after successfully mowing the front yard. I'll have to sharpen it before the next use. I do wish Haussmann would've sent the mower with a sharp blade. Besides that, the mower worked very well. It cut effortlessly and didn't slow down much in the tall grass. I agree with other's comments, the wheel hub caps are a joke. Take them off when you unpack the mower. Otherwise you'll get frustrated with them falling off all the time.

Conclusion:
It sounds like I found a number of things wrong but none of them were "deal breakers". This is a very capable cordless electric mower, even if it were to cost $100 more than the asking price. The height adjustment is smooth and light. It's weighted to the rear so that lifting the front end is really easy to get over sidewalks and roots. The bag is easy to empty. The metal deck, unlike the models with a plastic one, allows me to get closer to the edge of the yard so that I have less trimming. Over all, a very good mower for the money.

17.) heavy!
Reviewed by: briegull Rhode Island
Rating:
It's heavy. This explains a good bit - how are you going to repack and send off a seventy-five pound lawnmower if you don't like it. And it explains why it's a bit hard to push - it is NOT self-propelling.

It also explains why you shouldn't buy this unless you have a covered place *next to an outlet* to store it. It shouldn't get wet. It takes 16 hours to recharge and "optimally" should be kept plugged in at all times.

HOWEVER: it does a great job cutting the lawn. Adjusts to different heights easily, cuts a large lawn in one charge, etc.

18.) Excellent Cordless Mower for the price
Reviewed by: Richard E. Warren
Rating:
The mower was received in excellect condition. The only thing that required assembly was the handle. The turn on switch was already attached to the handle, I assume the manufacturer has started assembling this part because of complaints (this was mentioned as a problem in previous reviews).

I have mowed the lawn about 4 times now and the mower has not had any problems. The cut is fairly even, about the same has my gas mower. If the grass is longer it seems to drain the battery faster and I am not quite able to finish mowing my 1/4 acre of land. It does seem to have the power to mow through tall grass. As far as the weight of the mower, it is not any heavier than my gas mover, of which I have had to push up a very hilly yard. The gas mower had larger rear wheels which made it a little easier to push than this electric mower.

One minor complaint, the mulching attachment is a cheap piece of plastic you jam in the back where the bag is normally attached. When you are finished moving and are cleaning the mover, a large amount of grass is stuck around this attachment if when the grass is dry.

Over all, comparing the price of other cordless mowers, this is a good deal.

19.) Mfgr / Service contact?

I've only had it a month. Almost right out of the box, the LEDs on the mower and charger went out. That doesn't bother me, as long as the thing is charging. I removed the plastic cowl (4 screws, no problem) and verified current to the battery, so it seems to be recharging ok. But I would at least like to REPORT the problem to someone, maybe they can diagnose it. Problem is, try to find a service contact for this company! They're totally off the radar, almost to the point of being mysterious. I think the company is now owned by "Worx Tool Co" or something of that nature. I have not exhausted those leads yet. The mower itself works for me; I have a small yard. I saw comments about the weight of the mower - I don't have a problem with that because heavy is better than light & flimsy; it feels about the same as an ordinary gas mower. So far, for the price, I'm ok with the product as long as it keeps running.

Regarding ease of assembly, I have no comment, since it was given to me fully assembled, charged, and ready to go. The manual is less than helpful, with a fairly poor translation from French not helping issues either. The "key" is attached with a flimsy cloth tie that I will replace with something sturdier.

It does mow beautifully, with plenty of power, even in the heaviest grass. The bagger is small, but since I prefer to mulch my clippings, it doesn't matter. It is easy to operate and is no heavier than its predecessor. In short, I'm happy to go all-electric!

Mower arrived in good condition. Final assembly took about 10 minutes. Mower works fine, seems very sturdy; the weight actually works to your advantage, as the mower doesn't bounce around. The 18-inch cutting width means there is more back and forth, so cutting time is a little longer, and if you use the mulching feature, as opposed to bagging, you have to go a bit slower(the bag itself is easyon/easyoff). The idiot power level lights don't work on my mower, as the unit reads low power all the time. It recharges fine, as indicated by the light on the charger unit itself. I would buy this again, and , if the battery pack lasts seven years, I figure to save pretty much what the mower cost.

24.) Some good, some bad, overall I like it
Reviewed by: Michael Ogara
Rating:
As with the other reviews, mine is mixed.

The unit arrived in a box that had been crudely resealed with one 3" wide strip of tape used on each seam. ALL of the top tape had failed and the top flaps were loose and could be opened by hand. Two of the corner vertical seams were ruptured at least halfway down. I've never gotten a package so messed up via UPS before.

It appeared everything was there, however, so I accepted it.

The unit had a bent height-adjustment bracket (sheet metal) that I straightened with a crowbar so it would work. Then I noticed what smelled like battery electrolyte that had run out from underneath the motor/battery cover. I removed the cover (you'll need a LONG Phillips screwdriver bit or a bunch of magnetic extensions) and saw some more electrolyte inside, and that some of the battery hold-down clamps were badly corroded. The batteries on this are "sealed" lead-acid batteries, two 12V at 17 amp-hour capacity for 24V total. One of them had clearly been dripping a bit, probably because the box had been stored on its end during shipping or in storage.

I snapped off the cover on that battery to find loose rubber caps on some of the cells. The electrolyte levels were pretty good, with just one cell having it down to the tops of the electrodes, so I just topped off the batteries with distilled water, cleaned up the corroded battery clamps, and closed everything back up. I'd say you can turn this mower on its side for a short time to sharpen the blade, etc., but don't leave it anything but upright for long.

The motor is a DC, brush-type motor. Simple and reliable.

In use, it works fine. I have two lawns, front and back, each about 25 X 35 feet. With the unit showing full charge I did both lawns and it still showed full charge. One lawn was already short, the other medium high. So it's clear this mower has a lot of mowing capacity.

It's about as heavy as my old gas mower, because the batteries being lead-acid are just plain heavy. The old battery technology is probably why this unit is both kinda heavy and so cheap.

The mulching attachment works very well, I don't know where all the grass cuttings went, they just disappeared. I haven't tried it with the bag on the back yet.

I'd say if you're prepared to have to do a little tinkering with the mower once you get it, and don't mind that it's not as light as units with expensive Lithium batteries, it's a good value for the money. Since the batteries are normal lead-acid batteries, they could be replaced in years to come if they develop problems.

My mower appeared to have been in storage for awhile -- the corrosion on the battery clamps wouldn't have happened quickly -- and then crudely resealed. But all the parts were in the box, and it works.

Bottom line: I didn't appreciate the amount of fiddling it took to get it to be "right" -- and maybe you won't have to, but maybe it could be worse too -- but for the price I'm happy with it.

And not fair to the manufacturer that although the product is probably excellent when received in new condition and assembled correctly, but I'm not able to rate it as such since it was received in such poor condition. All my other orders from Amazon were received new unopened; very disappointed that this was done to me on this one.
UPDATE 5-22-2010:
Battery dead, will not charge after only 8 months. Kept in garage and always charged. Like in other comments no website and no help from Amazon.

Technically this is a good lawnmower. I can mow my entire front and back yards with no problems. The bag is very small though. The biggest problem is the weight of the mower. It is so heavy it digs rutts in my grass and I can barely push it if the bag is full.

i bought this mostly based on price. what i got was a bent handle. the unit works fine, after having someone fix, by hammering the handle but should have never been sent out. looked like a store return; sloppily taped up. not a honest company.

31.) used to work great...

This mower was strange. Sometimes it cut like a charm...it would run for an hour or more, blazing through tall grass like it was made for it. Other times, it would run for just a few minutes before dying. After about a month it stopped charging all together. Amazon was awesome-gave us a refund and didn't even make us ship the dumb thing back!

32.) Did not work

Didn't work when assembled and charged the first time. Appeared to be a new unit. Had to buy another bolt from the store in order to assemble, because the one that came with it simply would not fit, as the other reviewer indicated. Appears to be a nonworking unit out of the box, consistent with the sloppy manufacturing error of shipping a key bolt that doesn't fit.

33.) Sent open box item

The mower appeared to be used. Inside boxes were opened and components like the charger laying opened in the box. The mower top plastic appeared faded. I returned this item to Amazon. I don't know how they can sent an item in this condition.

34.) Yet another mower destroyed by UPS
Reviewed by: Doug San Jose, CA

As many others have posted here, the box arrived in tatters. Ours was barely held together by what was apparently the result of many emergency tape jobs as this thing was obviously dropped, kicked, dragged, bashed, and battered on its short trip from Amazon's warehouse in AZ to our house in northern California.

After wrestling with the woefully inadequate cardboard packaging, we managed to get the 100lb lawnmower unpacked without totally wrecking the box. Good thing, too, because the first thing we noticed was that the rear right wheel's axle was bent. This is where the height adjustment lever is located, and due to the damage to the axle, the lever was stuck. In addition the heavy plastic casing shows some damage, as if the box had been flipped over and dropped upside down.

It's quite obvious that UPS not only hates these boxes, but is incapable of handling them properly. And considering they only send 1 person to move these 100lb boxes, I really can't blame them.

Considering the horrible record Amazon has getting these things delivered in working condition to customers, they should cut their losses and drop this item from their inventory.

When this mower arrived at my home the box was pretty beat up, looked like it had been sitting around for quite a while. But, when I opened it, the mower looked good, so I put it together, plugged it in to charge for the recommeded 16 hours. When I used it the first time, it ran for about 5 minutes and went dead. I went through 2 more full charging cycles, and still never got more than 5 minutes use from it. Never fully charged, or even half way, so not a very useful item. Very heavy also. I don't recommend at all.

I purchased this mower last week for $199 and free shipping. Like others here,I found info on the company to be pretty sparse. I found a phone number in the owner's manual so I called it. It seems to be a call center for a number of mower/lawn care products. I inquired about a replacement battery for this machine. I was told that the replacement battery-WA0032- was over $200 and that did not include shipping. After searching online, the cheapest price I could find for the battery was $179 plus shipping. Ouch.

37.) Avoid This Mower

My mower arrived complete with all the parts and pieces. It did get beat up in shipping due to poor packing. It assembled easily enough though. This mower cuts fine but is rather heavy to push and I'm no dandy. It lasted for two mowing sessions before it got wet and wouldn't charge anymore. I tried contacting the company but couldn't find any numbers or info for them. I then called Amazon who also couldn't find any contact info so they refunded my order.

Summary: There are more reliable mowers at this price and the company is unreachable.
