i'll start from beginning. went to home depot pulled box off rack and $240 bucks later its in my driveway. after opening box it was built in 5 minutes
without any tools. filled crankcase with 20 oz. of included oil and put in some gas and it fired up on first pull. no choke or priming bulb nothing. just pull and it starts. awesome briggs motor. double horsepower of my old craftsman and half the sound. the exhaust pipe actually muffles sound. not like those tuna fish cans on the side of most motors. mower is very light and easily manuverable. just what i wanted. something simple. so it has a few holes on the deck used on the more expensive mower. BIG DEAL! it just means to me i got the same quality steel deck the better model gets.doesn't have any bells and whistles i don't need and without $500 price tag. cut so cleanly and evenly. sucked up all clippings. like a vacuum for my lawn. even some twigs i thought were just going flung off to the side were sucked up and munched into the bag. the chubby wheels floated over grass and i was done in a snap. wished i had more lawn.the clipping bag comes off easily and empties without making a mess. plus its a cool kawasaki ninja green! so happy i didn't spend so much more on the flashy honda. it just looks and feels like quality. highly recommended to my jealous neighbor. to you too

I like this no-frills mower. I'll go along with the other two positive reviews and note that this is one of Consumer Reports top rated push mowers.
Pros-
- Jointless, one-piece handle. Past push mowers have screws halfway up that loosen and make the mower harder to maneuver. The one piece handle makes this nice.
- two pull start guarantee, or they say they'll fix it.
- Briggs and Stratton engine.
Cons-
- Jointless handle really transmits vibration. I'd buy the "Good Vibrations" anti-vibration grip. Your hands may not tingle as much.
Also note the complaint that there is no side discharge, there's a card to get one if you want it. Also, the complaint that there are extra holes in the deck... just means it's the same deck that they use for their better models; big deal, it's painted.

I had 2 Sears Craftsman mowers before this, each lasted about 15 years, but Sears isn't what it used to be...
The Lawnboy was simple to set up. Attach the handle and add oil and gas. It started on the first pull out of the box! It is very quite and does a good job mulching.
Note that the side discharge chute is not included in the box. They include a card that says that most purchasers don't use it, so they send it free on request. Just mail in the enclosed card or check the side discharge chute request in the on-line registration at their website.
I was able to request my chute, but otherwise their web site is pretty poor. The dealer locater doesn't work (or they don't know they sell mowers in Texas). Also the registration application doesn't work - apparently today April 19, 2009 doesn't exist on planet Lawnboy. So I had better send in my chute request post card too.

Buying a mower is tough, especially if you want a push model. Most of the lower-end push models are just that - very low end. Sure, they will run, but performance (i.e., even cut, good mulching, good bagging) is so-so. And, if you can find a decent performing one, the build quality/durability when it comes to handles, wheels, etc. is lacking.
On the opposite end of the spectrum you have high end push mowers from Toro (their Super Recycling series) and Honda. Great mowers - built well, perform well, will last for many years. But, the push models they make are only available from dealers (not sold at the big-box stores) so you're looking at some big bucks.
The Lawn Boy is a perfect compromise. No, it's not as well-built as a mower costing twice as much, but it is much nicer than what you'd find at a big box store. Excellent engine -- the B&S Ready Start is just that: no priming, no choke, just pull and go. The wheel assembly is also excellent, with the same wide, easy turn wheels found on the higher end Lawn Boys. That is especially nice in a push mower since you're doing all the pushing!
The bag is not as nice as the higher end Lawn Boys that have a larger opening and a one-hand design. Still, this works well. The bag is of decent quality, but on the small side. That's not a bad thing in a push mower, however, since again, you're doing all the pushing!
Cut height goes up to 4 inches. Rare to see that in a mower in this price range. The one-piece handle is sturdy, but you may want to add a piece of foam if you're using the mower for a long period of time since that will cut down or eliminate "numb hand" from the vibration.
Performance is great. No problems getting through tall grass - mulched right through it with no visible clumps. I don't use the bag attachment unless I'm picking up leaves in the fall, so I can't comment on how well it bags yet. I'll update this in the fall after I have some experience. I can say that this is one of the best mulching mowers I've used. The "Consumer" magazine gives this a very high rating, and I concur - performs like a champ.
I don't find the weight to be a problem at all. Very easy to push, and turns (with the fat boy tires) are easy as can be. Solid construction means you have to deal with some weight -- the deck is solid and does not flex at all. Need thick steel (and therefore weight) to do that. If you can't push this you should look at a self-propelled model (or hit the gym a bit -- anyone who is in reasonable good shape should not have a problem).
It's getting ever more hard to find a decent push mower. Seems everyone wants a self-propelled these days. Nothing wrong with that, but I look at lawn mowing as a form of exercise. Plus, I have several planting beds in the lawn, and a push mower is a perfect fit for getting around the obstacles easily. Good to see that Lawn Boy is not ignoring this segment of the market. Highly recommend this mower if you're looking for a push model.
5.) Might be the best lawnmower I ever had

I've pulled the cord on my new mower twelve times. It has started twelve times. It's easy to pull, too, and doesn't require priming. I was pretty surprised at how easily it started.
My old mower, the famous, cheap red one from the discount store, was a 4.5 HP mulching mower that always bogged down in thick grass. I'm surprised at how great a difference the 6.5 HP engine makes! The Lawnboy doesn't seem to be fazed at all by the taller grass. (I mowed on the highest setting, because my grass was about 8" tall by the time my mower arrived!)
It mulched so well, my wife asked if I had mowed it twice. And unlike my old mower, it did my whole yard on 1 tank of gas. (The old mower required TWO full tanks if the grass was tall.)
I've only used it once, but I'm VERY impressed so far!
UPDATE!! Two months later, I'm still very happy with this lawn mower. It remains by far the easiest to start of any mower I have ever owned. (And frankly, I can't overemphasize this point, it's really that good.)
I'm far less impressed by the mulching capability than I was initially, and have switched to the bag. I've always avoided bags in the past, but somehow this seems easier than I remembered bags being.
The bottom line: If I had to buy a new mower today, I'd buy this one again in a heartbeat.

My grass was very tall because we've had so much rain, and it just never seemed to dry out. I have a 12-year old Craftsman mower, which still works great, but doesn't do a good job of mulching. Therefore, I needed to use the bag. Well, grass kept clumping and wouldn't go into the bag. Even though I bagged it, I still needed to rake the lawn, and it looks very uneven. I watched my neighbor do his lawn in half the time with a mulching mower and decided to buy a new mower to do my back yard. After reading the reviews on Amazon.com, I purchased this mower from my local Home Depot because I didn't want to wait for shipping since more rain was in the forecast.
This mower took less than 15 minutes to set up and it started right up. It was easier to use than my old mower, and it mulched the grass without any visible clumps. It cut very evenly, even though the grass was so tall. It maneuvers better than my old mower, and I mowed the back yard in record time without much effort. It mulched small branches and whirlybirds, was easy to maneuver around my flower beds, and the back yard looks great. It looks like it was vacuum cleaned!
I didn't find it heavy to push--it pushed much easier than my old mower. I could push it with one hand--even through the tall grass!
I highly recommend this mower.

Could not fine this mower at the local Big Box Stores. They want to sale the self propelled more so ordered it online. It was easy to assemble and started on the first pull. Much quieter than my old mower. Mulched my jungle of a lawn from 6 inches to 3 inches. The only clipping I was were when I pivot the mower on turns in damp areas. My old mower would stall in all modes of operation on tall grass. Who needs side discharge with a great mulching mower like this. The wide wheels took some of the bumpiness out of my lawn but did mean a little more overlapping on cuts to get the grass pressed down. The only thing I would add to this mower would be padding the handle, but a little pipe insulation will fix that issue. Only had the mower for a month but I think this is going to be the start of a pleasurable mowing season.
It is everything Consumer Reports said and more. If you are in the market for a great little push mower this is the one to get.

I purchased this lawnmower after a reasonable amount of review reading and research online. We have newly laid sod that had been growing for about a month or so, watering nearly every day. The last mower I used would have needed to cut about three times (granted, it was getting old and we didn't sharpen the blades) to get through the thick grass we have. This cut right through everything. The only minor downside is the needing to overlap enough on the next pass to pick up the grass that was flattened by the wheels on the first pass.

Compared to other inexpensive push mowers I've owned, this one is the best. It's relatively quiet, starts easily, and holds level RPM through any kind of cutting resistance. It's a bit heavier than others, but that's good for exercise and I suppose the weight is indicative of the higher quality of the components. The only problem was slight shipping damage that required me to pull out some pliers and bend the wheel-height locking mechanisms back into place. That took thirty seconds.

My Lawn Boy model 10640 is still quite new, but so far I'm very pleased.
It starts right up without priming as promised, on the 1st or 2nd pull each time.
Of equal importance to me is that it does a very good job mulching with no grass left behind.
I never bag the grass so the mulching was the main reason I chose the Lawn Boy, and I am quite satisfied.
One thing to note is that if the grass is damp or wet and you are mulching it, you will get some that sticks to the mower's blade housing, but a few scraping tools and 5 minutes work cleans up the machine sufficiently.
It also is easy to change the blade height. Keeping it on a higher setting allows better mulching.
I would buy it again.

The deck and handle seem very rugged. The wheels seem a little cheap, but they're holding up so far. The B&S engine has plenty of power to cut through our thick, overgrown St. Augustine grass here in Miami, which is impressive.
The height adjustment levers shipped in an odd configuration where one wheel was sticking up in the air. I had to take apart the wheel assembly and then put it back together to get the mower to be able to roll. Fortunately I had the tools for that. Now that that's done, I'm pretty happy.

It may be heavier than the last mower too but I am getting older!
On another note the mower arrived in its big box with some slight damage to the adjusters that set the mowing height. To Amazon's credit they compensated me for the damages and it was easy to get replacement parts from Lawn Boy which I plan to install when I have time.

I was hoping this mower would "start with the first pull" after I got it all set up, but it didn't. In fact pulled half a dozen times with no go, and finally put some starter spray in the air intake and got it started. It did assemble quickly, and appears to be rugged. Good features: saftey cover over exhaust to prevent hand burns from hot exhaust, no blub for priming mower for starts, easy to use handle, wide fat tires, Briggs and Stratton engine. Less than good features: height adjustment is very very very difficult for those with old hands like mine...the spring to adjust the height on the wheels is way too strong...looks like made for a locomotive! There is no "on mower" indication of which way is up or down on the wheel adjustment; grass catcher is difficult to remove and attach.
All in all, a fairly nice mower. the company that makes this mower should work on the wheel height thing and the grass catcher assembly to make them easier to use.

It starts up on the first pull and cuts the grass just fine. It seems less noisy than my prior mowers. The grass catcher is easy to connect. I have not used the mulch unit yet, but plan to use it soon.
I think they should have provided rubber wheels rather than the plastic. Time will tell how long they will whole up before I have to replace them. Also the four levels to adjust the height is a nuisance but it appears the industry have not come up with a better technique to level each wheel. Over all it is a good machine compared with its competitors.

I'd give this mower 5 stars, but...
When the mower arrived, the rear wheel height adjustment levers were damaged. I had read about this in another review before buying this, so I was surprised that it happened to mine as well. I assumed they would have fixed the packaging problem by now. I called Lawnboy (Toro) to report the problem, and they agreed to send parts, but when I mentioned the fact that other people have had similiar damage in shipping, the customer service agent couldn't care less. When the parts arrived a week later, they had only sent one lever, so I had to call them again. This time when I spoke to a customer service rep, I once again mentioned that there is an on-going problem with the way the mower is packed for shipping that allows the levers to be damaged. Once again, the customer service rep couldn't care less.
When I buy something from a company, I prefer to think that they money I spent goes toward good design and manufacturing. However, Toro seems happy to spend money on shipping damage instead of fixing a simple problem. So, great mower, but the company seems to need a wake up call on the importance of fixing problems.

First, the good. This is the easiest mower to start that I have ever owned. One gentle pull and it starts right up. And it has plenty of power, even in tall grass.
Now, the bad. When I opened the box, I found that the 20-oz plastic bottle of detergent oil had split; and the the mower was covered in oil. A giant mess. After cleaning that, I discovered that one of the cutting height levers was bent and did not fit snugly in its slot. I did eventually manage to adjust the height on that wheel, but I am not sure it will stay at the right height since the lever is not secured in its slot.
If not for the oil leak and the wheel adjustment issue, I would have given this mower 5 stars.

My mower had a problem right out of the box - engine would surge/hunt. I went to the Lawn-boy web site and found two "authorized" Lawn-boy dealers near me (22 miles actually). Neither dealer would work on the mower because they did not sell it! Called Lawn-boy customer service and they verified that independent dealers can choose how they operate. I should have bought the mower at Home Depot (same price as Amazon),then at least I could have returned the mower to them. I ended up fixing the engine myself. The intake manifold (as it is - a plastic tube) had a torn gasket which allowed air to enter the engine and cause a "lean" condition. A little silicone gasket sealer and the mower has been running great.

The mower itself is excellent, but... It appeared to be well packed, with no obvious damage to the carton on the outside, but it had clearly been stored (or even dropped) on it's end.
This was obvious from the way the mower was crushing the cardboard that is supposed to keep it in place inside the carton.
The result was that the two levers that are used to adjust height on the back wheels were bent, and the plastic cover supposed to slide over them was broken on one side.
The instruction booklet that accompanies the mower is less than clear also. Apart from the statutory garbage that clutters the pages, the book appears to indicate that there is a button to prime the motor before starting. There isn't, and none is needed. It starts very well - all 3 times I have used it.
While it's a 20" mower, smaller and lighter than the 22" it replaced, I don't notice a significant difference - except that it is lighter, quieter, and it does a nice job.

I checked to see if all the wheels were rotating evenly (they were) and to see if they were off balance (they weren't) and I also checked to see if one of the wheels happened to be set at a different height than the others (they werent). They said no sense in taking it apart.....warranty will not cover it. They will treat it as you did not put oil in it.
Notified Amazon...said they could not take it back because it was hazardous. Said get a claim number on the Warranty form Lawnboy if you can not get satisfaction.
Called Lawnboy again. They sent me somewhere else that was also another 50 miles from my house. I asked for claim number....they said must be looked at by service center first.
Again another service center would not dissemble.
Called Lawnboy back. Again no claim number.....suggested I take it over and over to service centers till I found one that would take it apart if I wanted a claim number.
Later without hope...I took small engine apart. Obviously had oil in it. All friction surfaces were clean and perfect except for crank/rod connection (If there was no oil other surfaces would be damaged as well).
Contacted Lawnboy and offered to send pictures, of course dis-assembly voids the warranty. And yet they still would not take my name and give me a claim number.

38.) Bagging doesn't work
Reviewed by: Hikerboy Pennsylvania Forests
Rating:
Bought this mower at Home Depot. When I cut the grass, I bag it and use the clippings in the garden. The Lawn Boy is poorly designed to bag your grass. The slot from the mower deck to the bag is small, about 3" by 5". The grass gets clogged up and none goes into the bag, so in effect it reverts to a mulching mower with all the grass clippings being deposited back on the ground with a lot of clumps of grass where you turn the mower. When I contacted Lawn Boy Customer Service, instead of just admitting the design is bad, they do this song and dance (see below). If you want to mulch, ok, buy it. If you want to put your clippings on a compost pile or on your garden, it's not going to work. Here is the response i got:
"Our fair and flexible warranty policies were created to ensure that any defect in materials or workmanship will be covered at Toro's expense. While we are very sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced, we must respectfully decline your request for a refund or replacement. Refunds, returns and exchanges are handled strictly through the place of purchase only.
Please find below some tips on cutting and mulching problems:
· We recommend washing under the deck with a hose. Instructions for this are located in the owner's manual. There could be something on the surface of the deck that is causing the grass clippings to stick. (There is nothing there-who wants to wash with a hose every time you cut the grass?)
· Make sure the blade is sharp (for best results, replace or sharpen yearly)(Blade is brand new)
· Be sure to operate the machine at full throttle (It runs at its own predetermined speed, there is no throttle)
· Cut only 1/3 of the grass blade at a time (You've got to be kidding. Go over the grass 3 times?)
· Mow only dry grass or leaves (Ok, but sometimes the grass is a little bit damp - my old $79.95 mower I bought at Wal-Mart 10 years ago could cut damp grass with no problem)
If the finished lawn appearance is unsatisfactory, try one or more of the following:
· Walk at a slower pace while mowing
· Raise the cutting height on your mower (My height is set in the middle of the available choices on the mower)
· Cut the grass more frequently (Yeah, I really want to do that-I cut the grass once a week as I've been doing for 30 years with my old cheap mower)
· Overlap the cutting swaths instead of cutting a full swath with each pass
· Set the cutting height on the front wheels one notch lower than the rear wheels (For example, set the front wheels at 2 inches and the rear wheels at 2 3/8 inches.) This will increase the air flow under the deck and works well on plush or spring cutting."
So there you have it: cut the grass twice a week instead of once, cut only 1/3 of the height at a time, and make sure it's perfectly dry. The rest is nonsense. Instead of just admitting the design is bad, they do this song and dance. If you want to mulch, ok, buy it. If you want to put your clippings on a compost pile, it's not going to work.
39.) Do not buy the self propelled model

I originally intended to buy the 10640 and did not need the self propelled feature since I was not going to be in the house very long. When I saw that the self propelled model was only 20 dollars more I was skeptical as to how they can make a self-propelled for so little differnce in cost. I decide to give it a shot and the self-propelled feature worked for about 5 minutes. Very disappointing as I had a whole yard to do and didn't have to time to run out and exchange it. I ended up pushing it which as you might guess pushing a self propelled model that doesn't work is a but harder. The mower cut fine untill I got to the back of the house where the grass was a little taller. The mower would clog up and shut off quite frequently. My prior lawn mower was a lawn boy 2 stroke which lasted over 13 years and the motor and self propelled feature were both still funtional. The only reason I gave up on it is that numerous parts have broken on it which made it non-functional and not worth fixing. My prior lawn boy could run over tall grass without stalling, run over twigs, branches and rocks accidently and never a hiccup. I bought this a Home Depot and will be returning it. If I exchange it, I will not get the self propelled model, but I'm not even sure I want the basic model as it seems a bit fragile. Even though I did not buy the 10640, I feel based on the overall quality and what I am used to in my old Lawn Boy that this model only rates one star.

Lots of holes on deck for parts for and upgrade model, does not have a side discharge as described, single speed fits all, easy to assemble, and as always quickly delivery by Amazon,
I mean even the Mao Xetung lawnmowers at Wally World have plugs in the deck for missing parts and are functioning as described.
The green color is very nice. Lawn Boy must believe that entry level must be less than exceptional and exceptable
