Terrific product. I love it. Got two batteries with it, but have never had to use two in order to finish my lawn. I'm using it on mulching mode and feel very good about that rather than putting clippings into the city's garbage. I have good luck with it as long as I don't try to rush. I just push and pull and it works great. I agree that the edger isn't totally satisfactory, but it is very easy to put on, use, and remove. My dad has had one of these for many years and still uses it and loves it. (He is in his eighties.) I find mowing pure pleasure now. Before I hated all the hassle and especially yanking the cord to get the stinky things started. This is a good, well-established company, too. Oh, and it is quiet!!

I love this mower, it has been more than capable in mowing my lawn without losing a charge. When I first used this mower I had a very long neglected yard and this took care of the weeds and the tall grass with no problem. I did have to dump the bag quite a bit but no more often than I would have with any other mower. I will never go back to a gas mower or go to a corded electric mower again.

This is a nice little mower for our yard that is about .1 of acre. It is light weight and very quiet. I've had it for about 2 years now and everything works great. I got the string trimmer attachment which is a real time saver having two tools in one. I wish the mowing path was a bit wider. I did have a switch problem but, one call to customer service had a whole new handle bar assembly in the mail at no charge. These people stand behind their product!

I moved into my house over 7 years ago. I went to Home Depot and bought a Toro self propelled lawn mower. I spent $400 on ita nd each year I needed to load it into the back of my car and bring it into the shop for a tune up -wait 2 weeks to get it back and buy the gas and keep the car clean. Needless to say it was an annoyance. After two summers on=f this and damamging the rear bumper of my car I decided
I needed an alternative. I purchased a neuton 5.1 with a 4 year extended warranty. It was a good little mower and 4 months before the extended warranty expired it died. I had purchased the mower directly from neuton. I was expecting drama but there was none. They told me that they would pick up the existing mower and then send the new mower-it made sense and I figured it would take a few weeks. Two days later I came home from work and the replacement mower was right there waiting for me. It took UPS 2 weeks to come and pick up the new mower (not neuton's fault). The new mower was the 5.2 and that was far superior to its predecessor. The battery life is much better. I have almost a half acre of plat property. The backyard is fenced. You can use the lawnmower at any time because it is so quiet. If you mow early in the morning the wet grass clogs up the mower. Usually after 7:30 AM is fine. You need to keep the blades sharp. If the blade is not sharp it does not do as good of a job. Changing the blade is weird but I call neuton whenever I need to change it for the instructions. If the blade is not shapr the grass does not cut evenly (this is standard for a lawn mower). The only bad thing that I can say about it is that the width is too narrow. I have a half acre of land and it takes me an hour to mow. This is one of the best purchases that I made. I do have a back up battery which is not needed. The one battery covers the full yard. I switch the batteries each time I mnow the lawn. Plugging the top of the battery keeps the charge better. This little machine cost me about $400 abnd has been worht every penny. It is a real good machine and I whoe heartedly reccommend it.

I have been using the CE5 mower for 5 years now. I've been cutting grass for over 40 years, and I've never had any gas powered mower last this long with zero problems. As you may know, many states have enacted laws increasing the ethanol content of gasoline. This damages small engines, and destroys them before their time. So now I have electric/battery everything, from snow blower, to weed trimmer, to lawn mower to leaf blower. No more gas cans in the garage, reducing fire hazard, and having to deal with gas going bad, as well as ethanol ruining a small engine. I love my Neuton lawnmower. It is wonderful!
8.) Cordless Neuton makes mowing environmentally smart

I bought the cordless Neuton CE 5.2 two seasons ago to replace my gas guzzling, oil burning, smoke choking, and eardrum splitting John Deere. The Neuton couldn't be easier and cheaper to operate....about 10 cents per charging. No more need to go to the gas station to fill gas cans, no more storing gas cans in my garage, no more changing oil and preparation for storage over the winter.
I have a third of an acre (average size lot in a sub-division) and ONE battery charge does the entire lawn. Simply take the battery pack off the charger and drop it in the battery chamber of the Neuton mower. Hit the switch and you have enough CLEAN power to do the job. This mower is so easy to use and easy to push, that my wife even volunteers to mow the lawn. I bought the 14-inch blade model, but if you want to make fewer "passes" you can get the 19" blade model. The 14 inch blade is plenty for me. The convenient rear bagger is very easy to empty. And the Neuton takes up MUCH less space in the garage.
Shortly after my purchase of the mower, I purchased the Edger/Trimmer attachment. Best idea yet. Does a great job on not only straight edging, but goes around curves equally as well. I no longer have to wear ear plugs when mowing, and lug around a separate appliance for edging. This edger attaches directly to the mower. No more backaches carrying those heavy trimmers around.
The reason I bought the Neuton CE 5.2 is to reduce noise, pollution and the cost of mowing my lawn. As it turns out, it also makes mowing MUCH easier and CLEANER.
I definitely recommend the Neuton CE 5.2

I have owned this mower for over a year now. I have two large lawns including an area for my dog run which gets high sometimes because I don't mow every week. The major reason I considered buying an electric mower was that the gas rotary mowers I have owned always were hard to start after the Winter season. I saw an ad for the Neuton and a cordless electric seemed attractive. No cord to run over or move around.
RATING DETAILS
Here is where the Neuton earned points:
1) Its starts every time.
2) Its environmentally friendly. No exhaust and no noise.
3) Its lighter than my old steel gas mower (slightly).
4) No leaking fluids when you want to turn it over to clean or maintain the blade.
5) Not that I don't own and like many foreign produced items, but this is made in America (Vermont). It feels good to me to support our domestic market!
Here is where the Neuton lost a few points:
1) After the first year the battery seems to be losing some of its charging capacity. Where I used to get an hour and a half's life on a full charge, now I get maybe an hour. Note this is a lead/acid battery and not a more high tech variety.
2) The trimmer attachment works, but its not really that maneuverable. Keep your corded electric string trimmer and pass on the too expensive trimmer attachment.
3) It takes me two days to mow all my grass. Seriously consider buying the extra battery if you have a lot of lawn to cut.
4) If you expect this mower to be as robust as your gas rotary model, you will probably be disappointed. But since the gas mowers where I live no longer come with a variable throttle, you don't really lose that much power. I see Neuton has a newer, more powerful version now. I would probably have purchased that one if it were available at the time.
Over-all I am happy with the purchase.
11.) Good for a small yard
Reviewed by: Peter Matthews Roslindale, MA United States
Rating:
My yard is small, and I mowed it with battery weed whackers for years. My good lead-acid Grass Hog died last year, and I picked up the Neuton 5.2 for a great price at a truck sale.
Battery management is a key issue with many battery-operated devices. With NiCad batteries, you need to drain them as much as possible before recharging, or they lose their capacity. It turns out that lead acid batteries (as in the Neuton) are the opposite: draining them completely can damage them, and you should try to keep them charged. (I have been told I killed my Grass Hog by letting the battery sit around drained in the basement over the winter.)
The Neuton is a nice quiet mower, and it handles my small yard easily. With a good charge on, last weekend I took an extra inch off my thick Zoysia grass, currently brown, in the front yard. I have not been able to do that well with weed whackers.
However, the blade is only 14 inches, and the mower length is way more than that, making it difficult to cut close to obstructions going forward. With most mowers, you re-mow the wheel line, when cutting. With this mower, you need to overlap the wheel span by about 50%, for a good cut. The practical cutting area is quite small.
I chose this mower over Black & Decker, because the battery is removable, and I was concerned about the battery freezing in the garage. I do remove it and charge it in the basement, but I gather this is not necessary. If I had it to do over again, I would give Black & Decker CM1936 19-Inch 36 Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Key Start and Removable Battery a good look, with it's higher ratings and wider wheel span. Ah, I see the new model 1936 has a removable battery - the older 1836 did not.
By the way, I always use the mulching plug and rake off excess as needed - I have never used the bag.
12.) 14" path really restricts this to *small* yards - see comparison chart...

Summary: If you have a very small yard (Perhaps 1000-1500 square feet of lawn) this could be a decent compromise for you, otherwise I don't think the 14" path and limited battery capacity will "cut it"
My neighbor has this one from a couple of years ago and I tried it out. It's smaller, lighter and quieter than the two cordless mowers we've used but that 14" path would probably be a dealbreaker for most people. When you consider that you will overlap each pass by at least 2-3 inches, you're really only cutting 10-11 inches on each pass.

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is almost NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a lot cheaper but then you have a cord.
>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.
>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.
>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.
>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18" Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)
>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.
>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted about 7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you could probably kill the batteries in a year or two.
>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.
>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.

Ordered it from Amazon on Thursday within the time-frame for next day delivery. One clicked and waited. No show on Friday, ugh. Turns out Amazon says heavy items (never got the weight definition) don't go out next day, but that I'll get a "courtesy refund" of my Prime fee for next day ($3.99). Ok, fine. It certainly doesn't merit a bad rating for the product - but something you should know if you want this quickly.
I received it Monday and immediately took the battery out to charge it. No light. I insert it a few more times to make sure I'm doing it right (it's a simple mini-din on the battery that an AC adapter plugs into). No dice. I let it charge overnight, but the mower is as dead can be when I try to start it up. This is where it gets interesting.
I speak to Neuton (DW Power) tech support, and mention it to them. After asking the obvious quesitons, the rep asks me if I have a voltmeter. It's fairly presumptuous to expect a customer to have that skillset, but I just happen to. The adapter tests fine so it is obviously a bad battery. Shame, but stuff happens - right? So because my grass is taking over my backyard I practically beg to get it next day, and the rep says I can wait the 7-10 days from VT to CA, or I can PAY to expedite it. Wait a minute, didn't I pay for a functioning product? "But sir, I'm sending this to you for free?!". Wow. If I hadn't researched this mower to death to determine it would work best for me this would have been on the first truck back to VA.
I hope and pray that I'll never need to contact their customer "service" again.
I will update this once I actually get the battery and I can use the product.
** Update 4-23-10 **
I got a call two days after I wrote this review from DW Power explaining that they were overnighting a battery to me at their expense. Whether it was due to this review or not I can't say, but I was very impressed - but that was just the beginning.
After charging the battery for a half day, I set it in the mower and immediately the activity light on the front of the mower turned green. So far, so good. I set the blade height to the highest setting (3" I believe), put the bag catcher on, and away I went.
This mower is a dream. Not only is it quiet but it's easy to maneuver. It does a great job cutting, and after mowing both my front and back lawns (about 45 minutes) the battery still had plenty of juice (although you should slap it on the charger right away per the instructions). It's nice to know my yard will only need one battery. I also like the fact that the large handle breaks down and can be folded (and the mower uprighted) to conserve space in the garage. I'm glad I gave this mower a second chance.

I have only used my Neuton CE 5.2 once. It took more assembly than I expected but it was not difficult. The biggest surprise was the weight. I am a 115 pound female. I chose the Neuton over another brand because the other brand was suppose to be twice as heavy. Not possible! I quickly discovered that while the mower was light (plastic) the battery was not. Hence when the battery is in place... Anyway, the cut was clean and comparable to gasoline and corded mowers but quiet? I don't think so. You don't have the start up noise of gasoline but operating noise is still noise. The battery charge lasted longer than the job. Would I buy it again? Probably, just bc I don't like storing gasoline and starting the gas powered mower. And while my lot is not huge, it is too big for a cord.

I very much like this mower. It is easy to handle and easy to take care of. One charge does my whole yard; front, back and side yards. I have a number of planter boxes for my berry patch in the backyard and I got the smaller mower because I hoped it would be easier to mow in and around the boxes and definitely is that. I am not very strong so many mowers are much to heavy for me to handle. Even though this mower is light it does a job like the heavy stinky gas driven polluting things. Plus, it is much more quiet and I like that very much! Now why did I give it only 4 stars after all that was said; because it is made in China. I don't expect it to last as long as I would have hoped if it had been made in this country. To give you my propective on this China made thing - my husband and I have an electric fan made by GE in 1936 that we got from his mother when we got married 50 years ago and we still use it every summer and it runs like new. This product is better than an electric mower with a power cord. The disadvantage of most electric mowers is the power cord hanging off the side. Another disadvatage is you are limited by the length of the cord.
With the Neuton mower there is no limitation by cord length. There is suficient power in the battery to mow most lawns with enough left over to assist your neighbor with his lawn. My lawn is small, and I take care of two lawns. One advantage of the Neuton mower over a gas mower is it is instant running without the need of a pull cord.

Rating:
Summary: I bought my mower through a special offer from our electric utility at $270 delivered. In my opinion it is it is not quite worth that amount. At $350 it is way overpriced for what it can do. If you want to do anything more than cut grass slowly, go with a gas mower.
PROS:
Light, no gas, minimal maintenance, starts always, quiet, fairly well constructed.
CONS:
Poorly designed handle, cut is fair at best, mulches poorly, mediocre bagging, bag is small, narrow cut, overpriced, poor battery life.
The Bottom Line:
Buy it if you have small clean yard and the price is less than $[...]. It will work. Do not get the trimmer, a separate one is much more versatile.
Tips:
The battery is pricey from DR [...]. You can find UB12100 deep cycle batteries online that will end up costing about 50-75% what your pay from DR. You need two UB12100 batteries and a screw driver. The savings is about $30-50 depending on what DR is offering. To extend the battery life always have it connected to the charger when not in use. Somewhat defeats the energy savings because of vampire draw on charger.
This mower cuts grass and that is about all. It does cut St. Augustine grass, but with no particular distinction. It does not cut as well as a good gas mower but it will compete with and cheap mower to merely cut grass. It does not mulch well and leaves fairly large pieces of leaves and noticeable grass clippings. If the yard is leaf free, after using the mulch attachment it looks OK. It does not bag the leaves very well and there remains a significant amount of residue. The wheels are not offset enough and the plastic body rather thick preventing close mowing against fences and walls. The hand grip is poorly designed and requires a healthy grip and good size hands to prevent it from constantly turning motor on and off with significant battery drain.
It is light and easy to maneuver even on a slope or over curbs. Since it is electric there are no gas cans, carburetor, no oil changes, no smell in the garage and no problem starting it. It is blessedly quiet. For those features alone it may be worthwhile. However, on the downside for the last three years mine has needed a new battery every year and at $[...]+ from DR you have to weigh the cost of that silence.

One Hour of Power on a Single Charge
The Neuton CE 5.2 Battery-Powered Mower is a welcome relief from the arm-yanking pull-starts, noxious fumes, startling noises, and uncomfortable vibrations of a gas lawn mower. It starts every time with a simple push of a button and mows for up to an hour on a single charge--ample time for most small- to medium-sized lawns. Need more time? Unlike other battery mowers with built-in batteries that require you to stop mowing to recharge, the CE 5.2 lets you drop in an optional spare battery and keep on mowing. For added convenience, you can also use the CE 5.2 as a trim mower for larger lawns.Environmentally Friendly Gas- and Oil-Free Operation
The key benefits of the CE 5.2 are that it works well without compromising the environment, and that it doesn’t demand continual maintenance. Because this mower never requires gas or oil, it won’t need a tune-up. Plus, it runs clean, meaning it won’t release harmful pollutants or carbon emissions into the air. Additionally, no gas or oil means easy cleaning and safe storage without spills or fumes.
Magnet Battery and 3-in-1 Cutting Options for Power and Versatility
This efficient mower owes its robust performance to a 32-amp, 240-watt-hour, 24-volt permanent magnet battery that’s both removable and sealed. The battery provides an impressive 45-60-minute run time per charge, depending on grass conditions. The CE 5.2 also offers versatile three-in-one cutting options and includes a rear grass bag (which holds one full bushel of clippings), a side discharge chute, and a mulching plug.
Lightweight for Easy Pushing, Adjustable Height for Greater Flexibility
Easy to operate, the CE 5.2 weighs just 48 pounds, so you won’t struggle to push it across your lawn. Additionally, a single-touch height-adjustment lever raises and lowers the cutting blade from 1.2 inches to 3.0 inches, giving you great flexibility.
14-Inch Cutting Width for Better Control and Great Results
Equipped with seven-inch front wheels and eight-inch rear wheels, the CE 5.2 is stable and sturdy, even when mowing around trees or shrubs or on rugged terrain. Its 14-inch cutting width lets you power through your lawn, leaving only manicured grass behind.
Truly Quiet Operation for More Enjoyable Yard Work
Because it runs on a battery, the CE 5.2 boasts a quiet running noise of less than 80 DbA. The low noise level makes operation more pleasant for both you and your neighbors. You might even be able to ditch those ear plugs for good!
Cost-Effective Design Saves You Money
The CE 5.2 saves you money year after year thanks to its low operating costs. The estimated cost to operate a gas mower (including gasoline, oil, spark plugs, filters, and tune-ups) for four years is as much as $260.00. The costs of recharging the battery over four years of mowing 28 times per year with a Neuton Mower is approximately $11.20. That's a huge savings!
Ready to Go Right Out of the Box
With the CE 5.2, you don’t have to wait to mow. It arrives with everything you need to get started right away, including the battery, battery charger, and rear grass-collection bag.
Optional Accessories for All-in-One Yard Maintenance
Neuton Mowers have attachments and accessories that give you options other mowers simply can’t. For instance, the optional Trimmer/Edger Attachment eliminates the need for a second piece of equipment and gives your yard and walkways a beautiful, clean finish. And for longer running time, you can also purchase an optional Spare Battery (model 178781).
The CE 5.2 measures 18 x 30 x 37 inches (WxHxD), weighs 48 pounds, and comes with a two-year limited warranty.
